When unit flees

Unit may start to flee in two cases:

  • when it fails Leadership test
  • when player orders unit, engaged in melee combat, to make tactical retreat by pressing retreat|rout button

When unit fails one of possible Leadership tests it starts to flee and tries to escape from the nearest enemy. Unit will not fight or react to Player's orders in this state until successfully regroup.

Fleeing unit starts to run away in the opposite direction from the closest to it enemy. If there are multiple enemies then unit flees from the largest one in terms of models. This check happens once in every melee combat round.

If there is map's border or any other impassable terrain, unit will try to avoid it first and only then run away from an enemy.

It is not possible to engage fleeing unit in melee but its models can still be damaged by ranged fire\magic spells or when passing through enemy units.

Fleeing unit does not hold the formation thus there is no spacing rule which prohibits overlapping and passing through other units.

Passing through other units (overlapping)

DOR-28 - Getting issue details... STATUS

When fleeing unit models passing through enemy units, every x seconds enemy attacks models it overlaps with. These attacks calculated and resolve in the same way as melee attacks do, except that there is not To hit calculation, as it is always 100% to hit. To wound and armor save calculations resolve as usual. If a model receives a wound it resolves instantly in the same way as during ranged fire or magic spell.

Fleeing unit models may freely pass through friendly units.

Fleeing speed in DO

DOR-30 - Getting issue details... STATUS

Based on in-game observation unit's fleeing speed may vary and most likely depends on unit m,i and some chance element as in one case unit easily runs away with few casualties sustained while in another one gets completely destroyed by chasing enemy.

In TT rules there is probability chance based on rolls of successfully retreat from pursuers, so it very likely that DO has same approach. Additional playtest is required to confirm this
